Late pins give Comets the edge

Pins in the final three matches gave the Waupaca wrestling team a 45-36 Eastern Valley Conference win Jan. 24 over Berlin.

The Comets overcame a 36-0 deficit on Parents’ Night and won the last five contested matches, four of them by pin.

Waupaca forfeited to Berlin’s Mitchell Kramer and Dakota Ross at 160 and 170 pounds and David Meza pinned the Comets’ Mike Hagen in 1:30 to give the Indians an 18-0 lead.

The Comets forfeited the 195-pound match to David Miracle, Hunter Boeck pinned Waupaca’s Caleb Hobson in 1:02 and Waupaca forfeited to Dylan Bortz at 285 to make it 36-0.

The Indians forfeited to Eric Bolwerk, Austin Turrubiates and Austin Gonyou at 106, 113 and 120, respectively, to make it 36-18 and Waupaca’s Guy Tessen needed only 29 seconds to pin Adrian Laude at 126.

Chandler Nimmer then handed Berlin’s Tim Trotter a 13-11 loss at 132 to cut the Indians’ lead to 36-27 and Waupaca’s Miguel Barazza pinned Mavrik Reilly in 2:34.

The Comets took their first lead – 39-36 – on Anthony Friese’s pin of Devan Buckholt in 27 seconds at 145 and the meet came down to the final match between Waupaca’s Mitchell Rotta and Jesse Haase at 152. Rotta sealed the win with a pin in 1:53.
