Bulldog grapplers competed at the Appleton North regional on Saturday, Feb. 9. Austin Wyngaard and Brett Handschke both earned regional titles, finishing first in their brackets at 145 pounds and 170 pounds, respectively. Both will advance to sectionals.

Andrew Moser (152), Tommy Thurber (160), and Austin Postel (182) earned second place finishes. Skylar Moderson (106) finished third, as did Jake Close (120). Justin Behnke (195) finished fourth. All six of them will join Wyngaard and Handschke at sectionals in De Pere on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Wyngaard had a first round bye. In the second round, he pinned Hortonville’s Morgan Coyle in 1:44. In the match for first place, Wyngaard earned a 6-0 decision over a Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln opponent.

Handschke won his first round match by pin in 1:17, and then beat Hortonville’s Justin Sullivan by an 11-4 decision in round two. In the match for first place, Handschke earned a 7-2 decision over an Appleton North wrestler.

Moser had a first round bye. He won his second round match by a 9-4 decision, but lost the match for first place against Hortonville’s Nate Rynish.

In the wrestle back for second place, Moser won by rule, having beaten a Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln wrestler in the second round.

Thurber won his first round match by a 5-1 score, but lost in the second round by pin to Hortonville’s Jared Luker, who would go on to take first place.

Thurber won a 4-1 decision in his first wrestle back match, and then earned a 7-6 decision over Appleton North senior Will Dougherty to secure second place.

Postel had a first round bye, and won his second round match by pin in 5:19. In the match for first place, he lost a 7-12 decision to an Appleton North wrestler.

Postel beat a Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln wrestler by a 12-0 decision to capture second place.

Moderson won his first round match by pin in 3:33, but lost to Hortonville’s Curtis Diedrich on a 2-9 decision in the second round.

Moderson then beat Menasha’s Brady Rasmussen in the wrestle back. Since Moderson had lost to Diedrich, who also fell to the wrestle back bracket after losing a match for first place, Diedrich earned second place and Moderson took third.

Close had a first round bye, and won his second round match by a 4-0 decision over Hortonville’s Carson Thern. In the match for first place, Close lost a 1-9 decision to David Granatelli of Appleton North. He lost by pin in the wrestle back, but still took third place.

Behnke won his first round match by a 12-7 decision, but lost in the second round. He lost again in the wrestle back to Hortonville’s Gunnar Ploch, but earned fourth place honors by rule since he had beaten Appleton East’s Jeremy Novenski in the first round.

Anna Malueg (113), Andrew Postel (126) and Texas Herter (132) all finished sixth. Carlos Enamorado (138) did not place.

The eight Bulldogs advancing to sectionals will compete in De Pere on Saturday, Feb. 16.
