Freedom hit only five of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter, but that was just enough for the Irish to hand Waupaca a 37-35 loss Feb. 12 in an Eastern Valley Conference girls’ basketball matchup.
The Irish led 12-9 after one quarter and held the Comet to four points in the second half to take a 21-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Comets were able to cut into the lead by outscoring Freedom 12-9 in the third quarter. Waupaca managed to cut the lead to a point twice in the final three minutes, but couldn’t take the lead.
Morgan Smith led Waupaca with 13 points, while Jessica Runge led Freedom with 12.
Comet fans also contributed $327.23 as part of the team’s Coaches vs. Cancer event. Farmer’s State Bank has offered to match that amount and all proceeds will benefit Waupaca Relay for Life.
