Naming contest for historical building in Iola

The Iola Historical Society (IHS) is conducting a contest to name its newest building.

The contest is open to all IHS members with the winner receiving a $20 in Iola-Scandinavia Chamber Bucks.

All entries should be directed sent on or before April 15 to Greg Losecher at [email protected], or N7306 Keatings Lake Dr., Iola, WI 54945.

The IHS membership will vote on the names at their April 29 meeting.

The 222 building on Depot Street originated as a garage and storage facility for Hawke Excavating. It was acquired by the historical society in 2008 with funds received from Chet Krause.

In a subsequent transaction, Krause donated the former Lashua Excavating building at 210 Depot Street to the IHS in return for which he was granted a life lease on the 222 building for the storage and display of his military vehicle collection. With his disposition of that collection a couple years later, occupancy of the structure was returned to the historical society.

During the past three years the building has been used to display large agricultural machinery and tools and manufacturing equipment which had been in storage or received as donations. Present plans are to continue building displays in the building along those lines.
