Sturgeon Shuffle set to go for a third year

The Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle is around the corner. And among the runners and walkers are students of the Longfellow Running Club in Clintonville.

“It is neat that the Sturgeon Shuffle Board is promoting a healthy event for our kids to compete in,” said Karen Petermann of the running club, which includes runners from Longfellow as well Clintonville Middle School. “It is also neat that our participation in the Sturgeon Shuffle will benefit the New London Family Medical Center.”

The third annual event, which is on April 27, is a competitive 5-mile and 2-mile road run/walk for all athletes, from serious racers to those who want to go the distance.

The route takes runners and walkers along the Sturgeon Trail, where, if the time is right, racers might catch a glimpse of the famous sturgeon doing their own run.
“It’s a nice event,” said Jim Ziegler, committee chair, noting he hopes for 400 participants in this year’s event. “We just have to hope for a nice day.”

Zielger welcomes the Longfellow Running Club as the honorary guest runners. The club has “done a phenomenal job of getting this young group of kids enthused about running,” he added.

All proceeds raised benefit the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports New London Family Medical Center and the communities it serves.

In the past, funds have been targeted for community programs for youth involvement, like the safe sitter classes, bike safety and Clintonville Middle School’s You Grow Girl program, a self esteem and wellness program designed to empower adolescent girls.

“We are excited to compete closer to home and to help support the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation,” said Petermann. “Many of our families depend on the services at the New London Family Medical Center so our Longfellow Running Club families are happy to support such a worthwhile program. Our Running Club and the WRHF share the same goals: we both actively promote healthy lifestyles. We are on the same team.”

Registration starts at 8 a.m. at New London Middle School and the race sets off at 9:30 a.m.

Awards are given to the top three in each age division as well as teams with greatest participation and most funds raised. “Instead of giving out standard generic medals, we went to a unique handmade ceramic coffee mug,” said Zigler, noting the mug will bear the new race logo. “It’s a nice award.”

Register for the 5-mile or 2-mile events online at www.active.com or print the registration form at www.wolfriverfoundation.org. All entries will receive a 2013 t-shirt. Chip timing is also available for all runners.
