Manawa School Board approves contracts

The Manawa School Board approved two teaching contracts for the 2013-14 school year as well as the contract for an Information Technology Technician/Media Specialist Director for 2013-15 at its July 15 meeting.

The board approved the 2013-15 Information Technology Technician/Media Specialist contract for Vicki Santacroce.

Prior to the vote, District Administrator, Ed Dombrowski informed the board that the administration became creative in expanding its options by combining two positions into one.

“We’re just not that big of a district that we can really afford to have a fulltime IT person and at the same time we have to take a look at whether or not we can really afford to have a fulltime librarian in the district,” Dombrowski said.

Dombrowski said the district posted for an IT/librarian specialist, media specialist director and had two candidates for the position.

The board was also informed by Dombrowski that the position is for 12 months on the advice of the district’s attorney because this position will supervise others – two library aides.

“I think it’s well worth the amount of money that we will pay for the position as well as getting the expertise that we will have fulltime, year-round in this position,” Dombrowski said.

Board member Helene Pohl questioned the length of the two-year contract, when teachers in the district receive only a one-year contract.

“It pains me because I was part of the interview and absolutely love our candidate. I think she would be a remarkable addition to our district. But the two-year contract doesn’t sit well with me. It has nothing to do with the candidate, it has to do with perception,” Pohl said.

Hollman asked why the contract was for two years and Dombrowski stated administrator contracts are for two years.

It was the recommendation of the administration to approve the contract as is. The board did approve the contract 5-0.

The board also approved a 2013-14 special education teacher contract for Marissa Jashinsky. It also approved a 2013-14 50-percent special education teacher contract for Cindy Jaeckle.

High School roof top heating units

Board member Stephanie Flynn, who is also on the Buildings and Grounds committee updated the board on the rooftop heating units at the high school.

“The high school heating units have been failing for some time,” she said.

Flynn said the units tend to break down, and it is becoming difficult to find parts for them. She said the Buildings and Grounds committee is starting to work on a plan to replace these units. The committee has been working with two contractors regarding quotes.

“It is going to be substantial so we’re trying to take our time to plan for it,” Flynn said.

First readings

The first readings of the updated Manawa Elementary School Handbook for 2013-14, the Manawa Elementary School Faculty Handbook for 2013-14, the Little Wolf High School Handbook for 2013-14 and the Co-Curricular Handbook for 2013-14 were on the agenda to be approved. After much discussion these items were tabled in order to condense them into an easier to read copy.

Other business

The board approved its annual committee appointments. It accepted the resignation of Amy Anaya, who was the high school Spanish teacher. It also approved the fall coaches and extra-curricular advisor contracts for 2013-14. Donations from A. Sturm & Sons Foundation, Inc. were also accepted. The first donation in the amount of $3,000 is for the arts, band, choral and library. The second donation in the amount of $14,000 is for high school scholarships.
