Thunderbirds have their way with Pacelli

One look at the final statistics and it’s not hard to see how Iola-Scandinavia handed Stevens Point Pacelli’s football team a 51-8 defeat.

Not only did the Thunderbirds have a 22-10 advantage in first downs, they also outgained the Cardinals 296-78 on the ground and had a 191-95 advantage in passing yards.

The T-Birds took a 30-0 halftime lead on a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and three more in the second quarter.

John Prahl opened the scoring with a 15-yard run and later caught a 13-yard TD pass from Nick Wavruk. Wavruk added a 9-yard run in the second quarter, hooked up with Prahl again on a 40-yard pass and Jake Hansen found the end zone from 3 yards out.

Wavruk threw his third TD pass of the day, a 36-yarder to Isaac Lashua, in the third quarter before the Cardinals got on the board with a 19-yard pass to cut the deficit to 37-8.

The T-Birds weren’t finished, as Wavruk scored on a 39-yard quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter and Cameron Gruenwald tossed a 39-yarder to Caleb Loken.

I-S wrapped up a spot in the upcoming playoffs with the win and improved to 4-1 in Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play and 6-1 overall. The T-Birds will host Manawa at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, for Homecoming before wrapping up the regular season Friday, Oct. 18, at Amherst.
