New London man charged with burglary

Timothy R. Achterberg, 32, New London, was charged with burglary and theft.

On March 10, a woman living on 14th Street told Clintonville Police Officer Craig Kamke that she suspected Achterberg had stolen silverware, an Instamatic camera and two cases of beer from her home.

The woman said she and several friends, including Achterberg, had been at a Clintonville bar the previous night. Around midnight, the woman noticed that Achterberg had left. The following morning, she noticed that the items were missing.

Prior to contacting the police, the woman made several phone calls and learned that Achterberg had come to her house with some of his friends while she was at the bar.

According to the criminal complaint, Achterberg called an acquaintance and asked him to pick him up from the bar in Clintonville. He then allegedly offered to host an “after-bar party” at the woman’s house.

The driver who gave Achterberg a ride to the woman’s house told police that he believed they were going to Achterberg’s house. He said while he and two other friends stood around drinking beer in the kitchen, Achterberg went through the house.

After the driver dropped Achterberg off, he discovered the silverware in his car, which he brought to the police.
