Foxes end season for Comet netters

After opening state tournament play with a win, the season has ended for the Waupaca volleyball team.

Fox Valley Lutheran swept the Comets Oct. 24 in a Division 1 regional semifinal on the Foxes’ home court. Waupaca also took three of five games from New London Oct. 24.

APPLETON – The Foxes defeated the Comets 26-24, 25-17, 25-12.

Team leaders included Alyssa Nicewander (three aces, 14 assists, six digs); Brenna Oleson (three digs); Josee Waitrovich: (one ace, three kills, nine digs); Macie Davidson (three kills, one block, one dig); Mandy Tomlinson: (three kills, 16 digs); Skye Olsen (two kills, one dig); Sydney Brooks (three kills); and Tina Rasmussen (18 digs).

“We put up a fight against FVL in the first game, but could not put them away,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “FVL has a good team, but we have our sights set on being able to beat them next year.”

Waupaca 3, New London 2

WAUPACA – The Comets trailed 2-0 in the matchup with the Bulldogs, but came back to win.

New London took a 2-0 lead with 25-18 and 25-21 wins, but the Comets tied the match with 25-19 and 15-18 wins in the next two games before winning the decisive fifth game 15-9.

Team leaders included Nicewander (two aces, three kills, 43 assists, 14 digs); Oleson (four aces, one kill, three digs); Waitrovich (five kills, seven digs); Davidson (two aces, 11 kills, five digs); Tomlinson (10 kills, three blocks, 24 digs); Olsen, (seven kills, one assist, three digs); Brooks (17 kills, four digs); and Rasmussen (two aces, 17 digs).

“It wasn’t our best play, but a win is a win in the playoffs and we held on for another game,” Benitz said.

“I was very proud of how far the team has come this year,” the first-year coach said. “I was fortunate to walk into a program with a fantastic group of girls who were willing to work hard and play as a team. The seniors will be greatly missed next year in their roles as players and as leaders, but I am excited about the group we have returning and we will be looking for big improvements for our next season as well.”
