Traffic stop leads to felony arrest

David W. Schmidt, 43, Tigerton, was charged with a fifth offense of operating while intoxicated, operating after revocation, four counts of felony bail jumping and possession of marijuana.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. Sept. 25, New London Police Officer Ryan Denu was advised that a 911 caller had reported a reckless driver heading south on U.S. Highway 45.

Denu subsequently spotted a vehicle matching the caller’s description. He followed it as the vehicle turned west on State Highway 54.

According to the criminal complaint, the driver failed to use his turn signal when making the turn.

Results from a blood test indicated that Schmidt had a 0.238 blood-alcohol level.

Later, while Schmidt’s vehicle was being towed, Sgt. Todd Sarazin found a bag of marijuana on the floor.

On Aug. 30, 2012, Schmidt was charged in Marathon County with two felony counts of failure to pay child support. He was released from custody on a $2,500 signature bond.
