Mathewson, Elwood F.

Elwood “Elly” F. Mathewson, age 85 of Tigerton, formerly of New London passed away on Monday December 2, 2013 at his home.

Elly was born on December 7, 1927 in Pittsville, the tenth of twelve children to the late Richard and Mable (Grote) Mathewson. He was a member of the New London Class of 1945. After a short time in the United States Army he returned and in 1948 married Beverly Fletcher of Manawa. In 1996 Elly married Debbie Malueg of Caroline. In 1999 they bought their dream home on 120 acres of woods in rural Tigerton; Mathewson’s Cedarview Acres. He worked as a lineman for New London Utilities early on and then in the 1950s operated his own business as a Standard Oil Agent. In the early 1960s Elly went to work for Sinclair Oil Company as a District Manager of several service stations throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. In the 1970s Sinclair merged with ARCO and he continued his career with them until his retirement. In 1982 he started Mathewson Electric which is still run by his son today. Elly was a current member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, pontoon boating, gardening, dog training, working on the house, and using his backhoe & tractor on the land. Elly also liked telling a good story and a stale joke or two.

Elly is survived by: his wife of 17 years, Debbie Malueg; his son, Pete (special friend, Donna Wochinski) New London; a sister, June Schroeder, Appleton; 2 brothers, Hogan (Jean) Mathewson, Appleton and Tom Mathewson, New London; his father-in-law, Ken Malueg, Caroline; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Diane (Jim) Krueger, Caroline; Lois, Marion, and Sally Mathewson, and Edwin Eggert, all of New London. Elly was preceded in death by his first wife Beverly, his son Paul, 3 sisters: Bonnie Mathewson, Margaret Meyers, and Henrietta Eggert, and 5 brothers: Egbert, Dick, Jack, Robert, and Dewey, as well as his mother-in-law Lois Malueg, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

A memorial service for Elly will be held Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion with Rev. Brad Dokken officiating. Inurnment will be at Floral Hill Cemetery in New London. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion. The Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory, Marion, is assisting his family with the arrangements.
