Bulldogs maul Spartans, Irish

A couple of frustrating early season losses lit a fire under the Bulldog varsity basketball team, and they overran the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans for a 50-19 victory on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

New London led 13-2 after one quarter and 21-4 at halftime. They extended their lead to 40-9 after three quarters and finished the game with a 50-19 advantage.

Mickey Roland led New London with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Gretl Steingraber added 11 points. Payton Mix netted eight, Amber Pethke and Maddie Schroeder both scored six, and Cambria Fitzgerald, Mercedes Wolfgram and Cassidy Pethke all scored two points.

The Bulldogs grabbed 33 rebounds and had 15 assists to go with 13 steals and five blocked shots. The team committed just seven turnovers and was whistled for only eight fouls.

New London 45, Freedom 18

The Bulldogs outscored Freedom 27-12 in the first half of their game on Friday, Dec. 13. New London kept the momentum in the second half, outscoring Freedom 13-4 in the third quarter and 5-2 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Lexi Roland scored 18 points to lead the team. Mickey Roland added eight, Fitzgerald scored six, Steingraber netted four, Amber Pethke tallied three, Leah Porath and Maddie Sanderfoot both scored two, and Cassidy Pethke and Schroeder both scored one.

New London made 18 of 49 shots (36 percent) and made 4 of 11 3-point shots (36 percent). The team made 5 of 10 free throws (50 percent) and pulled down 19 rebounds while sharing seven assists and nabbing 13 steals to go with one block. The Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over seven times and committed 15 fouls.

The Bulldogs play at home on Friday, Dec. 20. Opening tip is set for 7:15 p.m.
