I-S boys rebound from first loss

The Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference home win over Shiocton.

The Thunderbirds handed the Chiefs a 55-39 loss Dec. 19 to improve to 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Stevens Point Pacelli snapped the T-Birds’ seven-game winning streak Dec. 17 with a 52-45 victory.

I-S 55, Shiocton 39

IOLA – Shiocton outscored the T-Birds 11-2 in the first quarter, but I-S made up for the deficit with a 19-10 advantage over the next eight minutes to tie the game at 21-21 at halftime.

The T-Birds outscored the visitors 15-5 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the final period.

Kristian Welch led the way with a game-high 23 points, while John Prahl added 17. Nate Schmidt led Shiocton with 12 and Patrick Brouillard also finished in double figures with 10.

Pacelli 52, I-S 45

STEVENS POINT – Pacelli overcame a 20-19 halftime deficit and outscored the T-Birds 33-25 in the second half.

The Cardinals led 10-9 after one quarter, but the T-Birds had an 11-9 advantage in the second quarter to take a one-point lead at the break.

Pacelli outscored I-S 15-11 in the third quarter and 18-14 over the final eight minutes.

Alec Lund led the T-Birds with 12 points each and Prahl finished with 10. Pacelli’s Isaac Elliot led all scorers with 18, while teammates Brett O’Sullivan and Tyus Groos chipped in with 15 and 10, respectively.

The T-Birds will host Tigerton at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, in a nonconference matchup before returning to CWC-8 action Friday, Jan. 10, at Amherst.
