Waupaca Area loses 3-2 at home

A last-minute goal helped Marshfield pick up a Great Northern Conference girls’ hockey win over Waupaca Area.

Nell Eichten found the net with 19 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Tigers a 3-2 win Jan. 3 at the Waupaca Expo Center.

Mandy Tomlinson put Waupaca Area on the board with 21 seconds remaining in the first period off of an assist from Katarina Otter-Giese.

Marshfield tied the score on Morgan Larson’s goal with 5:46 remaining in the second period and took its first lead 8:12 into the third period on Kaylee Geiger’s goal.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as Waupaca Area’s Brianne Huettner tied the game 1:20 later with an unassisted goal. The score remained 2-2 until Eichten scored off of an assist from Larson.

Waupaca Area goalie Cassie Rasmussen had 19 saves, while Marshfield goalie Alexis Straughan stopped 30 of Waupaca Area’s 32 shots.

Waupaca Area will head to Minocqua Saturday, Jan. 11, for a 7 p.m. game with Lakeland before heading to Antigo Monday, Jan. 13, for a rematch with Northern Edge. The nest home game is a 7 p.m. contest Thursday, Jan. 16, with the Fox Cities Stars.
