Hatchets edge Waupaca Area

A girls’ hockey matchup between Waupaca Area and Tomahawk turned out to be a showcase for a pair of high-scoring players.

Erika Vallier had five goals and an assist to lead the Hatchets to a 7-5 Great Northern Conference win Jan. 23 over Waupaca Area, which got four goals from Mandy Tomlinson.

The teams went into the third period tied at 4-4 after each team scored two goals in the first and second periods. The Hatchets outscored Waupaca Area 3-1 over the final 17 minutes to get the win.

Jenna Schneider scored Waupaca Area’s other goal and Katarina Otter came up with an assist.

Waupaca Area goalie Cassie Rasmussen stopped six of the 13 shots she faced, while Hatchet goalie Erin Sparks was able to stop all but five of Waupaca Area’s 44 shots on goal.

Waupaca Area’s GNC rematch with Medford originally scheduled for Jan. 27 has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. The team’s will also host Fond du Lac at 7 tonight (Thursday, Jan. 30) before Northland Pines visits the Waupaca Expo Center Saturday, Feb. 1, for a 3 p.m. matchup.
