New London girls win three

A hot start helped the Bulldogs cruise to a 52-38 win over the Oconto Falls Panthers on Monday, Jan. 20.

New London jumped out to a 16-2 lead after one quarter and led 29-15 at halftime.
The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 8-7 in the third frame, and kept pace with the visiting team in the fourth quarter despite being outscored 16-15.

Mickey Roland earned a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Amber Pethke also scored 13 to lead New London, while Leah Porath added 10. Gretl Steingraber netted five, Maddie Schroeder added four, Lexi Roland contributed three, and Payton Mix and Cassidy Pethke both scored two.

As a team, New London made 17 of 40 shots (42 percent), 4 of 12 3-point shots (33 percent) and 14 of 19 free throws (73 percent). The team also had 30 rebounds, 14 assists, 15 steals, one block, and 19 turnovers, while being whistled for 18 fouls.

New London 41, Hortonville 24
A matchup between two teams with perfect Bay Conference records drew a large crowd on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to watch the Bulldogs and Polar Bears battle for sole possession of first place in the conference.

New London, backed by a boisterous home crowd, charged out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter. Hot shooting was highlighted by Lexi Roland, who hit a pair of big 3-point baskets to help her team gain momentum on the offensive end.

Both teams tightened up their efforts on the defensive end in the second quarter, as both teams scored four points in the second frame. New London held a 23-10 advantage at halftime.

The Bulldog offense came to life in the third quarter, which saw New London outscore Hortonville 11-6.

The Polar Bears outscored the Lady Bulldogs 8-7 in the final frame, but the game was still beyond reach. New London players and fans celebrated a 41-24 win as the final horn sounded.

Pethke led all scorers with 16 points, while Lexi Roland added 13 for the home team. Mix scored six and Mickey Roland added five points and 10 rebounds for New London, while Steingraber netted one.

Caitlin Hoerning led Hortonville with 12 points, Kaila Peterson added four, and Heidi Huebner scored three to provide most of the scoring for the visiting team.
New London made 16 of 46 shots (34 percent) and 6 of 11 3-point shots (54 percent). The team also made 3 of 8 free throws (37 percent).

The Bulldogs pulled down 30 rebounds and notched 13 assists, but turned the ball over 19 times. The Bulldogs were also whistled for 17 fouls. New London also had nine steals and two blocked shots.

With the win, New London moved to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the Bay Conference, while Hortonville’s record now sits at 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the Bay Conference.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday, Feb. 27, in Hortonville. Opening tip is set for 7:15 p.m.

New London 59, Luxemburg-Casco 16
New London led 12-9 after one quarter and 23-11 at halftime.An explosive third quarter saw New London outscore Luxemburg-Casco 21-0. The Bulldogs followed that up by outscoring the Spartans 15-5 in the final frame.

Porath scored 15 to lead New London, while Mickey Roland added 10 points and nine rebounds. Lexi Roland scored nine points, Mix added eight, Amber Pethke added six, Steingraber contributed five, Schroeder scored four and Cambria Fitzgerald netted two.

New London made 25 of 57 shots (43 percent) and 4 of 22 from 3-point range (18 percent). The Bulldogs also made 4 of 5 free throws (80 percent) and grabbed 33 rebounds and 11 steals.

New London plays at home on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Opening tip is set for 7:15 p.m.
