Comets end up with No. 5 seed

If the Waupaca boys’ hockey team is going to make some noise in the state tournament, it’s going to have to come on the road.

The Comets are seeded fifth in their regional bracket and will take on No. 4 Appleton United at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, for a regional championship.

The winner of that game will more than likely face top-ranked Green Bay Notre Dame Tuesday, Feb. 25, in a sectional semifinal in Green Bay.

Waupaca’s recent games include a 1-1 tie Feb. 8 with Lakeland, a 3-1 loss Feb. 6 to Ashwaubenon and a 7-3 loss Feb. 4 in Mosinee.

Waupaca 1, Lakeland 1

WAUPACA – Spencer Sutton put Lakeland on the board, but Waupaca’s Drew Simonson tied the game in the third period off of an assist from Jared Erickson.

Neither team was able to find the net in overtime.

Waupaca outshot the Thunderbirds 51-26 and Lakeland goalie Alex Moustakis came up with 50 saves.

“We charted 67 shots and another 10 that missed,” coach Dave Crisman said. “You can’t really get down on the guys because they did everything they could do today. We just didn’t put it in the net tonight. We had chances for almost everybody on the team to make something happen. It just didn’t go in.”

Ashwaubenon 3, Waupaca 1

The Jaguars found the net twice in the first period and once in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

Erickson scored an unassisted goal with 6:54 left in the game, but Waupaca couldn’t get any closer.

Comet goalie Walker Smith had 52 saves, while Ashwaubenon’s Ryan Wischow finished with 26.

Mosinee 7,

Waupaca 3

MOSINEE – Erickson scored twice and Frankie Ellingson once for Waupaca in a Great Northern Conference loss to the Indians.

Smith stopped 32 of the 38 shots he faced.

Waupaca hosted Stevens Point Pacelli Feb. 11 at the Waupaca Expo Center and will close out the regular season at 7 tonight (Thursday, Feb. 13) at Medford.
