Hawks soar over Truckers

The Xavier Hawks used a big third quarter to pull away from the Trucker boys’ varsity basketball team during their matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Xavier led 15-12 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime. They put the game out of reach by outscoring Clintonville 17-9 in the third quarter and 12-11 in the final frame.

Emmet Battenberg led Clintonville with 11 points, while Andy Schmidt scored eight. Tyler Petermann tallied seven, Parker Mindel netted six, Turner Doornink added four, and Skyler Lehman, Aaron Teske and Ross Westphal all scored two.

Clintonville made 16 of 32 shots (50 percent), hitting 6 of 15 from 3-point range (40 percent). The team made 4 of 5 free throws (80 percent).

The Truckers outrebounded the Hawks, 19-14, but turned the ball over 21 times, compared to Xavier’s nine giveaways. Clintonville was also whistled for 13 fouls, while Xavier committed just seven.

The Truckers trailed by just one point at halftime and were down four points going into the final frame, but the Tigers outscored the Truckers 22-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Doornink scored 19 to lead Clintonville. Schmidt added eight, while Petermann and Mindel both scored seven. Nick Hogen added two points.

Clintonville made 18 of 38 shots (47 percent), and hit 6 of 17 from 3-point range (35 percent). The team made 18 of 21 free throws (85 percent).

The Truckers had 15 turnovers and committed 19 fouls in the game.
