Iola girls out of tournament contention

Bonduel made sure the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team wouldn’t head into the state tournament on a winning note.

The Bears handed the Thunderbirds a 39-29 loss Feb. 27 in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Bonduel led 14-9 after one quarter, 23-16 at halftime and 32-20 after three quarters before the T-Birds outscored the visitors 9-7 over the final eight minutes.

Leighten Fischer led the T-Birds in scoring with nine points and in rebounding with six.

The T-Birds opened state tournament play March 4 by hosting Weyauwega-Fremont in a Division 4 subregional. The I-S girls lost 47-38.

Weyauwega-Fremont will play at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Amherst in a regional semifinal, while the winner of that game will play for a regional championship at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at a location to be determined.
