Water aerator on Mirror Lake

This winter’s cold temperatures and high snow volume resulted in the city of Waupaca beginning its operation of the Mirror Lake aerator last Friday, March 14.

The water aerator is located in the middle of Mirror Lake and provides needed oxygen to the fish and other aquatic life.

Reports had been received that the fish in Mirror Lake were struggling due to low remaining oxygen levels in the lake, warranting the operation of the aerator.

By operating the aerator now, an area of open water will be created in the ice on the lake, creating a hazardous situation.

The city encourages everyone to stay away from the open water and surrounding thin ice hazard. It is unsafe to go near the open water and thin ice on the lake.

They should stay back a safe distance to where the ice is thick enough to support them.
