Waupaca students win awards

Waupaca students placed second and third in the 2014 statewide Battle of the Books.

Sponsored by the Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association, the Battle of the Books requires participating students to read a variety of books in different genres. They are then quizzed on their knowledge of the books.

Teams compete at the middle school and high school level.

Waupaca Middle School students came in second place for the second year in a row in the state Battle of the Books. They competed with 157 middle school teams from throughout Wisconsin.

Eighth graders Sandra Olvera, Bailey Seefeldt, Alyssa Townsend and Nathan Wachsmuth were the members of this year’s middle school team.

“We were tied with first-place-winning Mahone Middle School from Kenosha, but – like the high school team – we were beaten on one tie-breaker question,” said Joan Schultz, the WMS team’s coach,

Waupaca High School earned a third-place win out of 91 high school teams competing in the Battle of the Books.

“The WHS team tied for second place with Kenosha Bradford, but KB’s team came out ahead on the tie-breaker round,” co-coach Heidi Nowicki said.

Nowicki noted that 2014 is only second year for WHS to enter a team in the Battle of the Books. Last year, the local students placed fifth statewide.

Members of the Waupaca High SChool team are Alec DeCaluwe, Mikah Forseth, Amanda Durfee, Marti Borst, with Olivia Schuelke as an alternate, and Amy Mead and Nowicki as co-coaches.
