Wolves fall to Shiocton

The Manawa Wolves traveled to Shiocton, Tuesday, March 4, to open the WIAA Girls’ Basketball Tournament. They returned home after a 58-10 defeat.

It was the third time Manawa faced Shiocton. In the previous two games the Chiefs also had very little trouble defeating the Wolves.

Shiocton’s pressure defense forced Manawa into 26 turnovers and a miserable 3 for 31 shooting from the floor. With less than thirty seconds left in the first half Manawa’s Brogan Bartel’s offensive put back finally ended Manawa’s basket drought that lasted over four quarters.

Highlighted by a three pointer by Jordan Elliott and an old fashioned three pointer by Madisyn Morack, the Chiefs took advantage of nine first quarter turnovers and a 0-5 from the floor to jump out to a 15-0 lead.

Forcing another eight turnovers the Chiefs reeled off the first 13 points of the second quarter before Molly Loughrin’s two free throws ended Manawa’s scoring drought with just under one minute to play.

A sluggish third quarter followed intermission as Shiocton outscored Manawa by a 9-4 margin.

Ashlee Strebe’s free throws were the only points for Manawa, as Shiocton finished with the final 16 points of the game.

The Wolves were led by Bartel’s three points. Ferg, Johnson, and Loughrin each scored two points. Strebe hauled down six rebounds and Laughlin added four.

The Wolves finished the season with a 3-20 record.
