Van Dyke, Nancy Steiner

Nancy Steiner Van Dyke, widow of Lt. Col. L.N. Van Dyke, passed away on Saturday April 5, 2014 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.

She was born in Stevens Point, the daughter of Professor and Mrs. H. R. Steiner. Her older brothers, now deceased, were Robert Steiner of Lancaster, PA. and Dr. John Steiner of Waupaca. Nancy married her college sweetheart, Lt. Col. L.N. Van Dyke when he returned from military service in Germany during World War II. They both taught at Waupaca High School for two years and then moved to Madison to work on advanced degrees. Nancy worked as a librarian at Maple Bluff Elementary and then at Shorewood Hills Elementary School. Her last position was at Phillip Falk Elementary which was where she worked up until the time she retired. “Van” was an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin, and later became Director of Grant-in-aid for the U.W. Athletic Department. Nancy and Van did volunteer work with youth groups from First United Methodist Church which served the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) in Tennessee for ten years.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday April 26, 2014 at Cress Funeral & Cremation Service, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison with Reverend Amanda Stein presiding. Reverend Stein was one of Nancy and Van’s volunteer workers at ASP. A visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
