Softball rally comes up short

Hits and runs were not a problem for the Waupaca softball team in its season opener.

Finding a way to stop Libby Borgardt was another story, however.

Borgardt’s three-run double in the top of the seventh inning helped Ripon knock off the Comets 13-12 April 8 in an Eastern Valley Conference matchup. Borgardt drove in seven of the Tigers’ runs and also went the distance on the mound.

Ripon did most of its damage in the early innings with two runs in the first, third and fourth frames and three in the second.

The Comets, however, kept pace with two runs in the first, one in the second and fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth that sent the teams into the seventh inning tied at 9-9.

Ripon came up with four runs in the top half of the inning to take a 13-9 lead. The Comets came up with three in the bottom of the seventh and left the tying run at third.

Waupaca outhit the Tigers 14-12. Tasha Smith had four hits and drove in a team-high five runs, while Jolie Borntrager had a pair of doubles and Mandy Tomlinson added a pair of hits as well.
