Comets split doubleheaders

Win a game, lose a game.

It’s been that kind of season so far for the Waupaca softball team.

The Comets recently split Eastern Valley Conference doubleheaders with Appleton Xavier and Little Chute.

Waupaca fell to Xavier 9-8 April 25 in the first game of a twinbill, but came back to win the second, 6-4.

The Comets also hosted Little Chute April 22 and picked up a 10-3 win in the first game, but came up short 12-4 in the second game.

Kat Otter had three hits and Brenna Oleson had two hits, including a home run, to lift the Comets over the Mustangs in the first game.

The Comets took a 9-1 lead into the fourth inning after scoring three runs in the first, five in the second and one in the third. Tasha Smith also had two of Waupaca’s 11 hits, while Jolie Borntrager got the win on the mound.

Deanna Guhl had four hits for Little Chute in the second game, as the Mustangs scored six times in the fifth inning.

Waupaca picked up a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Smith, Otter, Mandy Tomlinson and Lindsey Reach each had two of Waupaca’s nine hits.

The Comets are scheduled to host Berlin at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, for an EVC doubleheader. Waupaca will also head to Winneconne Monday, May 5, for a doubleheader that was rained out April 29.
