New London students visit UW-Oshkosh

New London High School bilingual students in Lori Mennnig’s class attended Multicultural Preview Day at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday, April 4.

This day consisted of a motivational speaker, various breakout sessions, a student panel presentation, lunch in the union and a campus tour.

New London High School’s Culture Club dance group performed at the 13th annual Language, Culture and Education Institute at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, April 5. This event was attended by educators from throughout the state. The NLHS Culture Club was awarded an honorarium for this presentation.

Menning led a session titled “Schooling and Immigrant Youth: a Panel of Students, Parents and Educators”. Some of the ELL/Bilingual students and parents joined in sharing their experiences. Parkview Bilingual Teacher Brittany Schmidt and Middle School Bilingual Teacher Rosa Carrillo joined the panel to highlight bilingual offerings unique to the New London School District.

Students participating in this event were Alberto Alcala, Maria Hernandez, Victoria Martinez, Ruby Fortuno, Jose Torres, Carlos Enamorado, Jesus Hernandez, Kevin Hernandez, Angel Gonzalez, Marina Gonzalez, Tayres Matamoros, Veronica Rosas, Arturo Cervantes, Abraham Fernandez-Zepeda, Marco Lopez, Amanda Martinez, Xylon Thao and Jesus Vargas.
