New London teen charged with battery

Jamal A. Pointer, 18, New London, is charged with substantial battery and felony false imprisonment.

Shortly after midnight Monday, May 5, Deputy James Santiago was advised that a 28-year-old woman was at the New London hospital’s emergency room, being treated for injuries from an assault.

Santiago reported that the woman’s left eye was swollen shut and she had blood on her face.

A CAT scan revealed that her left cheekbone just below her left eye socket was fractured.

The woman told Santiago that Pointer, whom she had previously dated, had texted her, asking for a ride to his apartment on Buelow Road near New London. She picked up Pointer and a friend near the skate park.

According to the criminal complaint, Pointer allegedly began questioning the woman about whom she was currently dating, then punched her in the face, took the keys from the ignition and told her she was not going anywhere.
The woman attempted to exit her car, but felt dizzy, passed out and fell to the ground.

Pointer allegedly placed her back into the car and she managed to drive to a hotel in New London where she called the police.
