Manawa Rodeo window painting begins

Businesses are reminded to get their windows painted –the Mid-Western Rodeo is only a few weeks away.

“We would like all local businesses to get into the rodeo spirit by decorating with a western theme,” said Rodeo Secretary Connie Klotzbuecher. “Our goal: Start promoting and getting people excited about the rodeo earlier this year.”

Any business that has its window(s) painted by June 16 will receive a rodeo fan pack, which includes a 2014 rodeo t-shirt, plus one adult and one child general admission ticket.

According to Klotzbuecher, most of the windows are painted by high school students or recent graduates of Little Wolf High School.

Recent graduate Bobbijo Rineck has been painting rodeo windows since 2011.

“I do it because I like to do it and it’s fun,” she said. “I love rodeo.”

When painting a window Rineck tries to connect the business to the rodeo theme. Sometimes the business suggests a theme.

Rineck said her specialty is cartoon characters.

“Last year I did tons of windows,” she said.

Most of the work was done at the last minute, she explained.

“There were no windows done and nobody had called me because my number was wrong,” Rineck said.
She went door-to-door asking if businesses wanted their windows painted for the rodeo. Nine businesses requested her services.

“I was just doing what I thought should be done,” Rineck said.

Her hard work impressed the people at the rodeo office.

“That just shows how much she cares,” Klotzbuecher said. “For a young girl, she knows the rodeo tradition is important to her home town.”

For 2014, Rineck was chosen to paint the rodeo office windows.

Most of the area businesses are willing to pay someone to paint their windows. This helps cover the cost of the paint and the person’s time.

“The rodeo offers young people in the Manawa area a place to volunteer or work to make money,”

Klotzbuecher said. “An example would be working in the popcorn stand for their church, helping their 4-H clean up, or by painting business windows. It gives them a sense of ownership and pride in their community.”
