Melum to compete in national pageant

Hannah Melum, of Iola, will compete in the National American Miss Pageant on Aug. 23-25 at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The 11-year-old daughter of Michael and Julie Melum will compete in the Preteen Division.

“The first pageant I did was when I was 6 years old,” said Melum. “So I have been doing them for five years now. My favorite part about pageants is meeting lots of other girls from all around the state of Wisconsin.”

For the National American Miss Pageant, Melum will be judged in four areas.

Formal wear, personal introduction and interview will each be worth 30 percent of her score, while community involvement will be 10 percent, for a total possible score of 100 percent.

“It is an all natural pageant, which means no make-up allowed for girls ages 12 and under,” Melum said. “There is no fake hair or glitz style outfits like you see on TV.”

“My favorite is formal wear because you get to wear a very beautiful gown; my mom always gets me a pretty dress,” she said. “It’s your time on stage.”

Melum hopes to continue doing pageants for the years to come.

“They are so much fun! Not only are you having fun, but you are learning many things,” she said. “like how to present yourself properly in an interview and to be a confident speaker.”

“If other girls are interested in trying a pageant, then I say go for it,” said Melum. “It is a great life time experience that you will never forget.”

Melum is in the seventh grade at Iola-Scandinavia Middle School.
