Triathlon a hit again

It’s an event that keeps getting bigger every year.

Nearly 1,000 participants registered for this year’s Waupaca Area Triathlon, held Aug. 16.

The long course, which consisted of a half-mile swim in Shadow Lake, a 20-mile bicycle ride south of Waupaca and a 3.1-mile run on city streets, drew 280 men and 163 women, according to the official race results.

Madison’s Jason Johnson was the first to cross the finish line in South Park and also turned in the fastest time among men, 1:21.11. He turned in the second-fastest swim time (9:54), the fifth-fastest bicycle ride time (50:21) and the fourth-fastest run time (19:02).

Jackie Hatherly of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, was the top female finisher in the long course in 1:28.39. She was first in the swim (10:17) and first in the bicycle ride (53:21). Her time and rank in the run were not posted on the official results.
