T-Birds open with pair of wins

Iola-Scandinavia’s volleyball team opened the 2014 season Aug. 28 with home wins over Port Edwards and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.

The Thunderbirds swept Port Edwards 25-14, 25-12, 25-17.

“Considering it was our first match of the season, the girls played mature and with confidence,” coach Jessica Wennesberg said. “They took control from the first set and never looked back.

“Emily Kroseberg’s play was impressive,” she added. “She challenged them with her serving and led the team in kills with six.  Kylie Johnson led the assists with 10, while Kaylin Ellioff had an impressive seven digs.”

The T-Birds dropped their first game with the Royals 25-17, but came back to win the next two, 29-27, 25-20.

“The girls proved a lot in our second match against Assumption,” Wennesberg said. “After losing the first set, they fought back to win the second and fought it out yet again in the third to take the match.”

Brianne Huettner led the T-Birds with seven digs, wile Micaela Jobke had a team-high five kills.

“Brianne’s back row play was tough,” Wennesberg said. “She played with focus and intensity the entire match.”

The T-Birds played at Tigerton Sept. 2 and will open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, against Shiocton.

“A come-from-behind win like this will do wonders for the girls’ confidence in the future,” Wennesberg said. “They never gave up hope. Overall, it was great team effort.”
