Iola woman writes children?s book

MaryAnn Rice, of Iola, recently published a children’s book, “Red: A Mini Pony’s Story.”

The 24-page book was written and illustrated by Rice under her pen name “Marice.”

The book tells of a mini pony’s search for a purpose to his life.

Although it is fiction, the story is based on how Rice’s granddaughter found her own mini pony.

Rice dedicated the book to her husband, Dave.

“This book was his idea,” she said. “His support, advice and our mutual love for horses got ‘Red’ started on paper.”

The book is also dedicated to “all those little girls who wanted a pony.”

Rice was one of those girls.

“Later in life, Dave and I had horses,” she said. “It was great, but the thrill was not what it would have been when I was a child.”

Rice is selling the books for $10 each, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson Foundation for research (www.MichaelJFoxFoundation).
