New London teen charged with battery

Jamal A. Pointer, 19, New London, is charged with felony bail jumping, misdemeanor battery, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

On Sept. 14, New London Police Officer Cheri Johnson was on patrol when she saw a woman walking on Pearl Street near the bridge, slightly hunched over and saying, “Help me, help me.”

Johnson also noticed a black Toyota Camary with a broken front driver’s side window at the intersection of Pearl and North Water streets.

The woman had broken glass in her hair and on her sweatshirt. She also had blood on her arms and hands.

Johnson helped the woman sit down on a bench, then contacted dispatch and requested an ambulance.

According to the criminal complaint, Pointer became angry at the woman while she was giving him a ride, exited the vehicle, then returned, punched out the window and elbowed her in the face, according to the criminal complaint.

On May 5, Pointer was charged with substantial battery and false imprisonment and released from custody on a $2,000 signature bond.
