?Hot topics’ in education

Waupaca School District Administrator David Poeschl will present “Hot Topics in Education Today” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public.

Poeschl will examine the controversial issues and challenges that are affecting public schools throughout the nation and the state, as well as provide data on the performance, costs and demographics of the Waupaca School District.

He will explain how Waupaca is implementing the Common Core state standards and how Smarter Balanced Assessments measure student progress and problem-solving skills by going beyond multiple-choice testing.

Poeschl will also discuss how the Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System evaluates teachers and supports continuous improvement in their performance.

He will speak about how private school vouchers, virtual schools, home schooling and charter schools affect the funding of public schools.

Poeschl has been district administrator in Waupaca since 1992. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in educational administration from UW-Madison.

Winchester Academy programs are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations. Poeschl’s presentation is sponsored by David Hathaway.
