Pumpkin contest winners

Rexford/Longfellow Elementary School recently announced the winners of its annual book character pumpkin decorating contest.

Students were instructed to decorate a pumpkin based on a book character, using any materials they wanted, except for carving the pumpkin. Some of the materials used this year included yarn, glitter, sticks, pipe cleaners, rocks, sheep’s wool, glasses, and plastic spiders.

At total of 87 pumpkins were entered this year. Two winners from each grade were selected.

The pumpkins were on display at the IMC for a week, and a lot of people came to view the pumpkins. School staff head many positive comments from other staff members, students, and parents about the creativity and work the students and staff put into their pumpkins.

Winners from each grade included:

Kindergarten: Makenna Peeters’ creation of Queen Elsa from Frozen and Macey Westphal’s creation of The Cat in the Hat.

First Grade: Alex Huffman’s creation of Nightsong and Brooke Montgomery’s creation of Olaf from Frozen.

Second Grade: Jearalyn Murphy’s creation of Fly Guy and the Frankenfly and Hayden Koch’s creation of The Lorax.

Third Grade: Nicholas Ashenbrenner’s creation of Tow Mater from Cars and Callie Behnke’s creation of Junie B. Jones.

Fourth Grade: Olivia Olmsted’s creation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Liberty Drefahl’s creation of Snoopy from It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.
