Bulldogs work to find their identity

The New London varsity girls’ basketball team lost five key seniors to graduation after last year’s run to Sectionals. This year, the team will re-load with several younger players as they search for their identity in the tough Bay Conference.

Head Coach Troy Krause is in his 13th year coaching. He owns a 219-92 record. Last year, his team posted a 15-1 record in the Bay Conference and a 20-5 overall record after narrowly missing another trip to State.

Seniors Payton Mix, Maddie Schroeder and Alycia Halvorsen will help lead the team this year, and are joined by juniors Cassidy Pethke, Macy Madsen, and Lili Gould. Sophomores Leah Porath, McCoy Mix, and Olivia Steingraber will be key contributors and freshman Jossie Hintzke will also compete for playing time.

The Bulldogs lost Mickey Roland, Lexi Roland, Cambria Fitzgerald, Gretl Steingraber and Caitlin Schmidt to graduation last year.

“We are definitely a team in transition as a result of graduating four out of our five starters,” said Krause. “Players are going to have to work to find their role on this team and we, as a team, will have to work to find out identity. Learning how to practice and play at a varsity level will be our first step in the process.

“West De Pere and Denmark should be near the top of the Bay Conference this year with West De Pere as the favorite,” continued Krause. “Both teams have quite a few returning starters from last year. We hope to figure out who we are as a team, so we can hopefully fight to be in the top of the conference as well.”
