High hopes in Clintonville

A good deal of varsity experience has been gained by the Trucker varsity basketball players in the last few years, and this year’s team will represent a seasoned squad that hopes to compete for a top spot in the Eastern Valley Conference this year.

The Truckers lost Taylor Carpenter and Jade Stilen to graduation last year, but this year’s team will be led by five seniors and three juniors.

Olivia Wagenson, Chrissy Betz, Danielle Kiefer, Emma Polzin and Ali Johnson are looking to have a breakout season in their senior year, while juniors Etta Sorenson, Caitie Carpenter and Autumn Voigt will provide solid play backed by varsity experience from last year.

Other varsity candidates include juniors Megan Wittman, Abby Krueger and Becca Torrez, as well as sophomore Catherine Morse.

“We are competing to be in the top half of the conference this year,” said Coach Stephanie Wengelski, who is in her third year coaching and has a 3-19 record as a coach. Last year’s team posted a 2-14 conference record and a 3-19 overall record.

“We have lots of experience with many players who are able to score,” said Wengelski. “The top teams in the conference this year will be Fox Valley Lutheran and Xavier. Little Chute will be near the top, and many schools will follow closely behind them.”
