An evening with Rudy

I recently had the privilege of spending an evening with Daniel Ruettiger, commonly known as “Rudy,” and best known as the indomitable underdog who realized his dream of playing football at Notre Dame.

His story inspired the making of one of the top ten inspirational movies of all time. I found Rudy to be a most fascinating man who has spoken to audiences all over the world from the UW Madison Rose Bowl Champions to dining with Presidents at the White House.

What I most took away from this experience was his beliefs and character which are sound advice for folks of all ages but perhaps best suited towards young people and those aspiring to be athletes.

First and foremost, Rudy was very down to earth and as the saying goes, “puts his pants on the same way we do.”

However, in real life as in his movie character, that spirit of perseverance, regardless of the obstacle is what can take anyone the furthest. He went on to say, being present and ready for duty daily without excuse will get you noticed.

And lastly, avoid negative people and negative surroundings, using the expression “delete” that which could bring you down. Cling to positive and upbeat friends and influences and good things will happen, even when you don’t expect it. I guess like others, I expected some type of magical message from Rudy but when it was all said and done found out that there is no replacement for good old fashioned, “college try.”
