From 1937 – 1938 she attended Miss Brown’s School in Milwaukee and lived in a boarding house at 33rd and Wisconsin Avenue where she made lifelong friends. In 1940, she took the El Capitan Train to Los Angeles with two friends. She worked as a hostess at Scully’s Restaurant in Hollywood. They met at a dance and had their first date at Washington Park Bandshell June 1942. During the war she worked at the Buick Plant in Chicago, inspecting airplanes and took a part-time job at Marshall Fields, downtown Chicago. On Sunday April 23, 1944 Evelyn and Charles were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bear Creek, WI. The reception was held at the family farm. A son, Frederick, was born in 1945. After the war they made their home in Milwaukee. A daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1948. They were members of Jerusalem Lutheran Church and School. She and Charles managed to take a vacation every year of their married life, traveling to many of the United States, Europe, and the Holy Land. When Charles retired from Wisconsin Telephone, they retired to the family farm in Bear Creek in 1976. They remodeled the farmhouse, became members of Trinity Lutheran Church, and Evelyn joined many organizations: Ladies Aid, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Marble Homemakers Club, Clintonville Women’s Club, and Republican Women’s Club Waupaca County.
