Country club burglary suspect charged

Jennifer L. Downey, 41, Wisconsin Rapids, is charged with burglary and theft.

On the afternoon of Sept. 3, 2014, Waupaca Police Officer Paul Benzschawel met with the manager of the Waupaca Country Club.

Someone had entered the country club’s office and removed a safe. Inside the safe were a box of checks and approximately $1,100 in cash.

A woman appeared in a security video from the night of the burglary.

The manager told Benzschawel an ex-employee, who was suspected of being a heroin user, may have been involved. Downey was his girlfriend.

Benzschawel contacted the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators there thought the woman in the video was Downey.

In addition to her charges in Waupaca County, Downey faces four counts of burglary in Waushara County.
