Comets outwrestle Truckers

Waupaca’s wrestling team picked up an Eastern Valley Conference win Jan. 8 over Clintonville.

The Comets handed the Truckers a 57-18 defeat and also placed seventh Jan. 10 at the Cutler Classic Invitational in New London.

NEW LONDON – Logan Bernhardt and Vince Ellie placed second at 120 and 182 pounds, respectively, while Mitchell Rotta took third at 160.

Coleman took home the team championship.

Waupaca 57, Clintonville 18

Waupaca used five pins and a technical fall to knock off the Truckers.

The Comets had pins from Guy Tessen (126), Alex Ronaldson (145), Rotta (160), Derrick Rotta (170) and Ellie (182). Tessen pinned Bridget Streicher in 1:52, Ronaldson pinned Lacey Jung in 51 seconds, Rotta pinned Shayne Collar in 3:35, Derrick Rotta pinned Jason Bilek in 3:25 and Ellie pinned Trenton Niemczyk in 1:27.

The Comets’ other wins came on Austin Gonyou’s 15-0 technical fall of Bailey Fields in 2:14 at 132 and Bernhardt’s 11-3 win over Cole Cotherman at 120.

Clintonville’s wins came on Ben Cotherman’s pin of Gavin Estrada in 3:39 at 106 and Tim Jerabek’s pin of Jimmy Intribus in 1:29 at 138.

Waupaca is off until the Comets host Freedom at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the final home meet of the season. The Irish are currently ranked No. 1 in Division 2 in the latest Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll.
