Kortbein, Verlyn L.

Verlyn L. Kortbein, age 87 of the Town of Larrabee, Waupaca County, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday evening, January 17, 2015 at his home after a brief illness. 

Verlyn had many blessings in his life, including his wife of 62 years, Ruth (Schnake) Kortbein. He was born on January 7, 1928 in Bear Creek as the son of the late Albert and Esther (Tornow) Kortbein. Verlyn graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1945. He served his country in the United States Army from 1946-1947, stationed in the Philippines and Okinawa. In 1955, Verlyn and Ruth bought their farm where they lived until Verlyn’s death. In addition to farming, Verlyn was a transmission specialist at Tripod Chevrolet for 25 years, retiring in 1981. Among his hobbies were gardening, woodworking, and spending time with his family on the farm property. Verlyn really enjoyed woodworking and sharing special woodcrafts with his family and many other local residents. Since 2000, Verlyn and Ruth enjoyed being “snowbirds” and traveled to Bronson, FL each winter. He was an active member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville where he generously volunteered his time. Verlyn also enjoyed volunteering his time at the Marion Area Historical Society. 

Survivors include his wife Ruth. Verlyn and Ruth loved their big family and are survived by children: Marcia (George) Thayer, Karen Hill, Linda Glubka, Julie Kortbein, Mary (Martin) Wobig, and finally their son, Robert (Pam) Kortbein. Family lovingly extended to their 12 grandchildren: Erica Plesser, Lisa Payne, Dan Glubka, Mandy Hill, Chris Lauterbach, Jeff Lauterbach, Robert Hill, Stephen Hill, Sarah Lauterbach, Jace Kortbein, Lucas Lehman, and Mitchell Kortbein. Verlyn also had six great-grandchildren: Marley, Mayzie, Andrew, Lydia, Addison, and Mason, and a son-in-law, Rudy Lauterbach. He was also survived by siblings: Duane (Marilyn) Kortbein and Norma (Richard) Jirschele; sisters-in-law, Jean Kortbein and Lois Schnake. Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents; his loving daughter, Lois Lauterbach; a treasured son-in-law, Mike Glubka; brothers, Marvin and Harold, and sisters, Elda and Irma. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville with Rev. Daniel Burns officiating. Interment will be at the St. Martin Lutheran Cemetery in the spring. Military honors will be conducted outside of the church on Wednesday following the funeral by members of the Clintonville American Legion Post #63 and VFW Post #664. Friends may call at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday from 4 – 7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
