Pins add up in loss to Irish

There’s a good reason why Freedom is the state’s top-ranked Division 2 wrestling team.

The Irish used seven pins Jan. 22 in a 70-9 win over Waupaca in a matchup of Eastern Valley Conference teams at Waupaca High School.

Blake Thoe gave the Comets an early 6-0 lead by pinning Alex Rohan in 3:58 in the 285-pound match.

Freedom tied the score in the next match, as Garrison Murphy pinned Gavin Estrada in 1:49 at 106.

Freedom took the lead for good at 113, as Mitch Garvey pinned Tanner Johnson in 3:27 to give the Irish a 12-6 advantage.

Logan Bernhardt picked up a 5-0 win over Nolan Gaffney at 120 to cut Freedom’s lead to 12-9, but those turned out to be the Comets’ final points of the meet.

Mason Manteuffel pinned Guy Tessen in 3:49 at 126, Evan Vosters took care of Austin Gonyou in 4:38 at 132 and the Comets forfeited the 138-pound match to Cody Walrath to give the Irish a 30-9 lead.

Freedom’s Sean Murphy pinned Alex Ronaldson in 3:24 at 145, Blaz Daul handed Derrick Rotta a 7-0 loss at 152, Seth Vosters pinned Mitchell Rotta in 1:03 at 160, Waupaca forfeited to Adam Vosters at 170 and Jake VanGrinsven pinned Vince Ellie in 1:41 at 182. Waupaca then forfeited the final two matches to Ramsey Bloy and Evan Philibeck at 195 and 220, respectively.

The Comets are now off until they head to a Division 2 regional meet Saturday, Feb. 14, at Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Teams from Lakeland, Mosinee, Nekoosa/Wisconsin Rapids Assumption/Port Edwards, Tomahawk and Wittenberg-Birnamwood will also compete at the meet, which starts at 10:15 a.m.
