Dance team aiming for three-peat

Waupaca High School’s dance team has a chance to make it three in a row.

The team has a chance to defend last year’s Division 2 Jazz and Division 3 Pom state championships Saturday, Feb. 7, at the state cheer/pom competition at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse.

Coach Amy Marcom’s squad also won state championships in both events in 2012 and have won eight state titles over the years.

The team consists of

senior captains Emily Cummings, Kelsie Krawczyk and Diana Chu; juniors Kira Mielke, Madison Hansen, Cheyenne Bennett, Brooklyn Rohloff, Claire Jungers and Nikky Weise; sophomores Grace Koch, Caroline Ogden, Mackenzie Morey, Hannah Nasberg and Zoe Johnson; and freshmen Rainy VonGunten, Bella Udoni, Alyssa Townsend, Caitlin Kelly, Sydney Erspamer and Katie Schmidt.

“We have an undefeated season with 12 total wins, including being regional champs,” Marcom said. “We have also won highest score of the day twice and best choreography for our Pom and Jazz routines.”

The squad is scheduled to perform its Pom routine at 4:25 p.m. and its Jazz routine at 8:53 p.m.

“Our strongest competition at state will be Prescott, (Green Bay) Notre Dame Academy, Onalaska, Madison Edgewood and St. Francis,” Marcom said.

The team will warm up for state by performing its Jazz routine tonight (Thursday, Feb. 5) during halftime of the girls’ basketball game against Little Chute.

“We will also have a post-state rally at 8 p.m. Monday Feb. 9, in the high school gym,” Marcom said. “This is open to the public and we will dance our routines for the last time. The Waupaca Middle School team will also perform.”
