Goodwill employee charged with theft

A former employee of the Goodwill Thrift Store in Waupaca has been charged with embezzlement.

Maria D. Muniz, 30, New London, is charged with theft in a business setting. She is accused of stealing nearly $17,000 while working as a team leader.

On Feb. 21, 2014, Waupaca Police Officer Clint Schroeder met with an asset protection specialist at the Goodwill store.

The specialist said he was looking through the sales records when he noticed there were numerous canceled transactions.

He then reviewed security videos from the store and saw Muniz printing off receipts.

Muniz was then taken to the Waupaca police station for questioning.

According to the criminal complaint, Muniz told Schroeder and Detective Sgt. Brian Hoelzel that she could identify from her office computer which registers had cash sales that day. She then recorded the transactions and the exact amount of the sale.

Muniz allegedly voided the sales on a back-up register when no one else was working, then carried the cash drawers into her office and took the exact amount of money that had been voided.

She also made fraudulent records of cash refunds for returned merchandise that had not been returned, the complaint says.
