Comets shut out in first two games

It was a rough first week of the season for the Waupaca girls’ soccer team.

New London and Seymour shut out the Comets in a pair of nonconference games. New London picked up a 7-0 win April 2, two days after Seymour returned home with a 9-0 victory.

Waupaca managed only two shots against New London and none against the Thunder.

“The first games were tough,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “The girls had difficulty moving the ball through the midfield. Every time we played the ball into the attacking third of the field, the possession stalled. For the most part, we were back on heels defending our goal. Our first touch on the ball was not confident, but that will improve with practice.”

Waupaca played at Stevens Point April 7 and will host Hortonville at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 10. The Comets will also open Eastern Valley Conference play at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, against Appleton Xavier.

“I believe this team will develop during the course of the season, but it will take some time to accomplish that,” Polebitski said. “The team has heart and determination. With that, anything is possible.”
