Waupaca strikes out in opener

The Milwaukee Brewers weren’t the only ones to come up short in the season opener.

Weyauwega-Fremont’s Cadyn Ehrenberg struck out 12 Waupaca batters and scattered three hits as the Indians picked up a 10-1 nonconference win over the Comets April 6.

It was the first game of the season for Waupaca, while the Indians improved to 3-1.

An eight-run second inning turned out to be the difference in the game, as W-F came up with six of its 11 hits in the game and took advantage of a pair of Waupaca errors.

The Comets came up with a run in the top of the fourth inning, as Katarina Otter-Giese led off with a single, stole second and scored on Brenna Oleson’s bunt single.

W-F added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Besides getting the win on the mound, Ehrenberg also had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Rachel Knorr and Kiley Akey also had two hits each for the Indians.

Alexis Schuelke went 1 1/3 innings and ended up taking the loss for the Comets.

Both teams opened conference play April 7. Waupaca hosted Freedom in the Eastern Valley Conference opener, while the Indians traveled to Amherst to take on the Falcons.

Waupaca is scheduled to play at Little Chute at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, April 9) before hosting New London for a nonconference doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11. W-F will host Shiocton at 4:30 p.m. today.
