Responding to mass disaster

Dr. Frederick Stoddard will present “Psychiatric Interventions After Mass Disasters” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Free and open to the public, the program is hosted by Winchester Academy of Waupaca.

Stoddard is the chief of psychiatry at Shriners Hospital for Children and a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital. He will discuss disaster planning, resources, training and interventions, as well as roles of the media, mental health professionals, first responders and individuals when large-scale disasters occur.

Stoddard will offer a practical discussion of the recommendations for psychiatric evaluation and interventions for disaster survivors.

The field of disaster psychiatry encompasses a wide range of interests, from public health preparations to interventions that alleviate stress in children and families. More than 800 psychiatrists are believed to have responded to the 9/11 attacks.

A professor at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Stoddard received his bachelor’s degree in government from Bowdoin College and his medical doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.

Recognized internationally, Stoddard leads disaster psychiatry training and responses for the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

He has worked with survivors of many disasters, including the Newtown school shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing.

He is a clinician, teacher, researcher and author of over 100 publications. He is senior editor and an author of Disaster Psychiatry: Readiness, Evaluation and Treatment. His book will be available for purchase at a 50 percent discount.

Cookies and coffee are served at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m.

Winchester Academy program expenses are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations. Stoddard’s program is sponsored by Dr. David Hathaway.
