T-bird golfers to host match

Numbers won’t be a problem this season for the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ golf team.

Coach Alan Bauer has 17 golfers to work with this spring, including a pair of starters from last year’s Central Wisconsin Conference championship team.

“We have two varsity starters returning from last year’s conference champion team: Zach Mortenson and Jon Bauer,” Bauer said. “Ryan Melum and Chase Przybylski are some of our seniors who will be looked to this year for their leadership and play. The rest of our team has some promising talent, but these young men will need to work hard to earn playing time at the varsity level.”

Other golfers include junior Adam Cherek; sophomores Jon Bauer, Cody Breitzke, Justin Krause, David Mortenson, Carter Przybylski and Gunner Grenlie; and freshmen Ben Cady, Connor Drath, Justin Gilliard, Ben Hauser, Joe Makovec and Trenton Niemi.

The Thunderbirds opened the season April 13 at an invitational at Manawa’s Cedar Springs Golf Course and will host an invitational Friday, April 17, at one of Wisconsin’s top golf courses, Whistling Straits near Sheboygan. Teams from Weyauwega-Fremont, Manawa, Amherst, Bonduel, Gresham, Marion, Shiocton, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Menominee Indians, Stevens Point Pacelli and Marathon will also compete.

“Our conference should be well-rounded again this year, with many teams having the chance to win the conference,” Bauer said. “There will be a few standout individuals from our small schools that will show the golf talent we have in central Wisconsin.”
