Hawks shut out Comets

Xavier handed Waupaca an 8-0 loss May 18 in a matchup of Eastern Valley Conference softball teams.

Meanwhile, Waupaca picked up nonconference wins May 16 over New Holstein and Brillion at a tournament in Brillion and beat Clintonville May 14.

Xavier 8, Waupaca 0

WAUPACA – The top of the order came up big for the Hawks, as Xavier’s top four hitters in the lineup came up with eight of the team’s 11 hits.

Xavier scored twice in the first, fourth and fifth innings and once in the second and third.

Autumn Grenlie had Waupaca’s only hit off of Erin Powers, a single.

Waupaca 9, Clintonville 2

CLINTONVILLE – Mandy Tomlinson had three of Waupaca’s 14 hits, Bobbi Sue Sell added two and winning pitcher Alyssa Engebretson struck out six batters.

Clintonville opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but Waupaca answered with one in the second and four in the third and fifth.

The Comets hosted Amherst May 19 and will wrap up the regular season at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at home against Ripon.

The state tournament gets under way Tuesday, May 26, with regional quarterfinals.
